Two people have been taken to hospital after a toxic gas leak at a communal swimming pool in Benalmadena Costa.
The incident happened at around 1.30pm on Tuesday at a residential complex on Calle Las Naciones.
Municipal sources told Malaga Hoy that a pool maintenance worker is believed to have accidentally mixed two incompatible chemicals, triggering a violent reaction that released chlorine gas.
The cloud spread around the pool and reached a nearby car park.
Two people who inhaled the fumes were taken to Benalmadena hospital for treatment.
Local firefighters brought the release under control and took precautions around the affected area.
Crews wore specialist protective equipment, including breathing apparatus and splash-resistant suits.
Following the incident, the fire service warned against mixing liquid chlorine with acids such as hydrochloric acid, saying the combination can release highly toxic chlorine gas.
Exposure can cause severe irritation, coughing, chest pain and difficulty breathing, with potentially life-threatening consequences at high concentrations.
