The European Commission has instructed Schengen border authorities that Gibraltar residents must not be registered in the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES), following complaints about incorrect registrations.
Gibraltar’s government confirmed the clarification after talks with EU officials.
The exemption covers Gibraltar identity card holders and civilian registration card holders under the post-Brexit treaty arrangements.
Some affected travellers found themselves incorrectly recorded as still being in Schengen after returning to Gibraltar, because their departure through the Spanish land border was not logged.
This left the system counting down their apparent remaining travel allowance, raising fears of problems on later trips.
How to remove a record
Residents already registered should request deletion from the authorities in the Schengen country where their most recent entry or exit was recorded.

They should explain their exemption and attach their passport and both sides of their Gibraltar identity or civilian registration card.
Records created before July 15, 2026 can also be removed.
Gibraltar’s government cannot delete records directly. Residents can copy requests to eesremoval@gibraltar.gov.gi and report refusals to eesinfo@gibraltar.gov.gi.
Travellers should carry their passport and valid Gibraltar card, present both at Schengen external borders and explain their exemption if officials attempt to register them.
