A British tourist drowned after he and his brother allegedly jumped from a tourist ferry in a drunken challenge to swim to a chiringuito on the Costa Dorada.
The victim, an English man aged around 40, was travelling aboard the Dorimar ferry between Cambrils and Salou, in Tarragona, on Friday when the tragedy unfolded.
He was on board with his father and brother, who also jumped into the sea.
According to the investigation, the two brothers had allegedly been drinking heavily during the journey.
After the ferry captain ordered staff to stop serving them alcohol, they reportedly decided to challenge each other to swim to shore so they could reach a beach bar.
The pair then allegedly climbed through one of the catamaran’s windows and jumped into the Mediterranean in an attempt to reach Ponent beach.
Family members and other people aboard the vessel quickly alerted the crew.
Emergency response
Shortly before 7pm, Catalunya’s Medical Emergency System (SEM) was notified that one of the men had drowned before reaching the beach.
Three ambulances were dispatched to the scene, along with a team of psychologists to support the victim’s relatives. His brother survived.
