Police seized more cocaine than hashish in Sevilla for the first time on record in 2025, it has emerged.
More than 5.4 tonnes of cocaine were intercepted in the province last year, overtaking hashish after seizures of the latter plunged to their lowest level in a decade.
The figures are contained in the latest annual report from Spain’s Centre for Intelligence against Terrorism and Organised Crime (CITCO).
State security forces seized 5,417kg of cocaine in Sevilla province during 2025, equivalent to 21.15% of all cocaine confiscated across Andalucia and 7.04% of the national total.
The quantity nevertheless represented a 26% decline from 2024, when authorities seized around 7,420kg in the province.
The historic change does not reflect a sudden explosion in cocaine seizures, but rather a dramatic collapse in the amount of hashish being intercepted.
Hashish seizures collapse by 65%
Authorities seized 4,330.5kg of hashish in Sevilla last year, down a staggering 65% compared with 2024.
It was the lowest figure recorded in the province for a decade.
Sevilla accounted for just 2% of all hashish intercepted in Andalucia and 1.68% of the amount seized across Spain.
The figures mark the first time since CITCO began producing its report that cocaine seizures have exceeded those of hashish in Sevilla.
It represents a notable development for a province strategically connected to the Guadalquivir, a waterway that has become a major focus for law enforcement agencies combating drug trafficking between the Atlantic coast and inland Andalucia.
Marijuana takes third place
Marijuana was the third most commonly seized drug by weight in Sevilla during 2025.
Authorities confiscated 2,594.7kg, a decline of around 6% compared with the previous year.
It was the second consecutive year in which cocaine seizures exceeded those of marijuana – something that had previously been unusual in the province.
Sevilla accounted for 26.63% of all marijuana seized in Andalucia during the year.
Police also confiscated 75,524 cannabis plants and around 19kg of hashish oil.
Across most Andalucian provinces, hashish remains the drug seized in the greatest quantities, followed by cocaine.
Jaen is the main exception, where marijuana takes first place, followed by cocaine and hashish.
Drug arrests also fall
The figures come despite Andalucia remaining Spain’s leading region for drug-trafficking arrests.
In Sevilla, 872 people were arrested in connection with drug trafficking during 2025, representing 16.56% of all such arrests in Andalucia and almost 4% of the national total.
That figure was also lower than in 2024.
A further 12,583 people were reported for drug-related offences in the province during the year.
The latest data comes amid growing concern over the scale and violence of organised drug trafficking in southern Spain, particularly around the Guadalquivir and the wider western Andalucian coastline.
