An earthquake has struck beneath the Gulf of Cadiz following a week of heightened seismic activity in southern Spain.
The tremor comes just over a week after a magnitude 5 earthquake struck Granada in the early hours of Saturday, August 15.
That considerably stronger earthquake was felt by residents across the area and was followed by a series of aftershocks over the following days, while damage was reported at several locations across Granada province.
According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), Sunday’s earthquake beneath the Gulf of Cadiz had a magnitude of 2.5.
The seismic event was recorded at 1.43pm, at a depth of approximately 18km. It was listed by the IGN at 3.43pm local time.
There have been no immediate reports of the earthquake being felt by residents or causing damage.

Series of tremors across southern Spain
Sunday’s earthquake follows several other minor seismic events recorded across Andalucia and the surrounding waters over the weekend.
On Saturday, a magnitude 2.0 earthquake was recorded in the southern Alboran Sea at around 11.25am.
Another magnitude 2.5 tremor was detected near Cambil, in Jaen province, at approximately 12.32pm.
