This is the moment flash floods sparked chaos across parts of Andalucia on Thursday, as violent thunderstorms brought torrential rain, hail and powerful winds to the region.

Footage shared online showed roads being transformed into fast-flowing rivers within minutes, with some of the most dramatic scenes emerging from the province of Jaen.

In Cambil, thick, muddy floodwater was filmed gushing down a residential street lined with homes.

Another clip showed the aftermath of the deluge, with cars apparently shifted by the force of the water and left stranded in thick deposits of mud.

Nearby Carchelejo was also battered by the storm, with footage showing a plaza submerged by floodwater as plastic chairs were blown and swept across the street.

The dramatic scenes came as much of Andalucia remained under weather warnings on Thursday, with the region simultaneously facing extreme heat and severe thunderstorms.

Aemet had placed parts of Jaen under warnings for storms, while temperatures in the Guadalquivir Valley were forecast to reach 40C.

Across Spain, warnings for rain and storms were also active in Andalucia, Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia and Murcia.

Further east, heavy hail was filmed pounding inland areas of Almeria, where unstable conditions have repeatedly brought the threat of intense downpours and thunderstorms during the current spell of extreme summer weather.

The storms provided a dramatic contrast to the scorching temperatures gripping other parts of Andalucia, with Sevilla, Cordoba and Jaen among the areas enduring temperatures around the 40C mark.

The volatile conditions are part of a period of increasing atmospheric instability over Spain, with Aemet forecasting intense showers and thunderstorms, potentially accompanied by strong wind gusts and large hail, as cooler Atlantic air begins to interact with the hot air that has dominated the country.
