This is the moment a four-year-old boy was pulled from the wreckage of car that plunged 20 metres down a ravine in Granada.

The dramatic rescue unfolded at around 5.15am on Friday after the 112 emergency service received reports that a car had overturned in the Alpujarra village of Soportujar.

When Guardia Civil officers arrived, they managed to make contact with the occupants and heard a woman calling for help along with the cries of a young child.

The mother told officers she was trapped inside the vehicle with her four-year-old son, while her 36-year-old partner was unconscious.

With the car suspended on the hillside and at risk of falling further, one Guardia Civil officer climbed down to the wreck despite the unstable terrain.

As the impact had badly damaged the vehicle’s frame and jammed the doors shut, the officer smashed one of the windows to gain access.

Working together with the child’s mother, he was able to lift the boy safely from the vehicle before handing him to another officer waiting outside.

The woman was then rescued, leaving only the unconscious driver trapped inside.

After confirming the man was still breathing and responding slightly when called by name, emergency crews waited for firefighters, who arrived shortly after 6.15am and freed him from the wreckage.

Because the steep terrain prevented an ambulance from reaching the crash site, emergency workers and Guardia Civil officers carried the injured man around 300 metres to where the ambulance was waiting.

All three occupants were taken to a medical centre in Orgiva for treatment.
