August is one of the liveliest months of the year in Andalucia, as towns and cities across the region come alive with colourful ferias, flamenco, live music, fairground rides and late-night celebrations.
Whether you’re looking for a huge city festival or a traditional local fiesta, there’s no shortage of events to experience this month. Here are some of the biggest.
Malaga Feria (August 15-22)
One of Spain’s most famous summer festivals, the Malaga Feria transforms the city for eight days of celebrations.
The festivities are split between two very different venues. During the day, the Feria de Dia takes over Malaga’s historic centre, with Calle Larios and Plaza de la Constitucion at the heart of the action.
From around 1pm until 6pm, the streets fill with live music, flamenco dancing, horse-drawn carriages and thousands of revellers enjoying the festive atmosphere.
After dark, the celebrations move to the Real del Cortijo de Torres, where the Feria de Noche continues into the early hours.
The vast fairground is home to dozens of public casetas, amusement rides, concerts, food stalls and bars, making it one of the biggest night-time fairs in Spain.
The official opening is marked by a spectacular fireworks display launched from La Malagueta beach, while this year’s feria will also feature a newly designed ceremonial entrance arch on Calle Larios.
Among the fair’s most cherished traditions are the daily horse and carriage parades around the Real, performances by pandas de verdiales – Malaga’s traditional folk musicians – and plenty of glasses of ice-cold Cartojal sweet wine or a refreshing rebujito, the classic Andalucian feria drink.
Almeria Feria (August 21-29)
Held in honour of the Virgen del Mar, Almeria’s biggest annual festival combines traditional celebrations with a lively modern fair.
During the day, the Feria del Mediodia fills the city centre with food, music and drinks, with traditional bars and pop-up ambigus spread across Plaza Flores, Plaza Tomatito, Plaza Virgen del Mar, Plaza Pablo Cazard and the Mirador de la Rambla.
As night falls, the action moves to the fairground, where visitors can enjoy amusement rides, concerts, casetas and entertainment until the early hours. This year’s feria will also unveil a new monumental entrance arch and upgraded decorative lighting at the recinto ferial.
The celebrations coincide with the popular Cooltural Fest, meaning visitors can also enjoy major live performances from artists including Hombres G and Ana Torroja.
The fair continues its commitment to accessibility by offering inclusive fairground sessions, with designated hours featuring reduced noise levels and static lighting on rides for people with sensory sensitivities.
Among the feria’s best-loved traditions are the colourful giants and big-heads parades (gigantes y cabezudos), the Battle of the Flowers, and performances by international folklore groups, all helping to preserve the city’s long-standing cultural heritage.
Feria de San Bartolome, Martos (August 20-24)
The Jaen town of Martos celebrates its patron saint with five days of festivities featuring concerts, processions, family activities and the traditional feria atmosphere that defines Andalucia in August.
Feria de San Agustin, Linares (August 27-September 1)
Linares rounds off the month with one of Jaen province’s biggest fairs.
The celebrations include live music, amusement rides, local gastronomy, cultural events and the traditional casetas that stay open well into the night.
