Drivers in Marbella have been warned to expect increased road checks this weekend as police carry out an intensified campaign targeting drink and drug driving.
Local Police have confirmed they are conducting preventive roadside checks in partnership with the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT).
The latest operation took place in La Campana on Friday, with a video showing motorists being pulled over and asked take a breathalyser test.
Police said they are stopping motorists to carry out alcohol and drug tests aimed at identifying drivers who could ‘pose a danger to other road users’.
Alongside the drink and drug controls, police are also inspecting motorcycles and mopeds to ensure they comply with Spanish road traffic regulations.
Particular attention is being paid to unauthorised vehicle modifications, including illegal exhaust systems and other alterations that could compromise safety or cause excessive noise.
The checks form part of a nationwide DGT campaign running from July 13 to July 19, with police urging drivers not to consume alcohol or drugs before getting behind the wheel.
Motorists are also being encouraged to nominate a designated driver where possible or use a taxi or public transport after a night out.
The latest roadside operation comes as Marbella enters one of the busiest weekends of the summer, with thousands of tourists expected to flock to the Costa del Sol.
As part of the town’s wider summer security plan, Marbella Local Police have also increased patrols in Puerto Banus, where specialist Beach Unit officers are carrying out preventive patrols around the marina and surrounding areas.
The force says the increased presence is designed to improve public safety, deter crime and ensure a rapid response to incidents during the peak holiday season.
Marbella Local Police said the preventive checks reflect their commitment to making the town’s roads safer and reducing serious accidents.
The force reminded motorists that ‘responsible driving saves lives’ and warned that similar operations will continue throughout the municipality over the coming days.
