Much of Andalucia is under official heat warnings on Wednesday and Thursday as temperatures climb towards 40C.
Four provinces have been placed on yellow alerts for high temperatures, with the hottest conditions expected across inland areas of Jaen, Cordoba, Sevilla and the coastal province of Almeria.
The warnings are in force from 1pm until 8.59pm on both Wednesday and Thursday.
Areas under alert include:
- Campiña cordobesa – highs of 39C, locally reaching 40C
- Valle del Guadalquivir de Jaen – highs of 39C, locally reaching 40C
- Morena y Condado (Jaen) – highs of 39C, locally reaching 40C
- Campiña sevillana – highs of 38C
- Poniente de Almeria and Almeria city – highs of 36C
The warnings come as meteorologists continue to monitor the development of what could become the first major heat episode of the summer.
While coastal areas of Malaga and the Costa del Sol are expected to remain somewhat cooler thanks to sea breezes, inland parts of Andalucia are already seeing temperatures well above seasonal norms.
The latest alerts follow warnings from Aemet that summer 2026 could become one of the hottest on record in southern Spain, with forecasters expecting above-average temperatures throughout June, July and August.

Residents and tourists are being advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours and drink plenty of water.
They should also check on elderly relatives and vulnerable neighbours and never leave children or pets inside vehicles.
The heat alerts are currently scheduled to remain in place through Thursday evening, except in Almeria, where they end on Wednesday night.
