Estepona has approved plans to install 144 new smart road traffic cameras ‘aimed at improving road safety, easing congestion and helping authorities respond more quickly to accidents’.
The project will be put out to tender with a budget of €970,410 and covers both the installation of the new cameras and the maintenance of the town’s existing traffic monitoring infrastructure.
The new equipment will be integrated into Estepona’s municipal traffic management system, which is monitored in real time from the Local Police headquarters.
The system allows officers to view live images, record footage, store data and coordinate responses to incidents across the municipality.
Estepona first introduced its smart traffic camera system in 2023 with the installation of 110 cameras across the town.
The network was later expanded through agreements with residential developments, adding a further 73 traffic monitoring cameras in urbanisations.
With the latest expansion, the municipality will add more than 140 additional devices, extending coverage across a wider area of the town.
Deputy Mayor for Security Ana Velasco said the decision reflects the positive results achieved since the system was first introduced, particularly in helping authorities manage urban traffic flows more effectively.
The new cameras will be connected directly to the central municipal server, allowing information to be accessed not only by Local Police but also by other security forces when required.

In addition to monitoring traffic incidents, the upgraded network will be used to help manage vehicle speeds and traffic density across the town.
The contract also includes the installation of a dedicated speed-control point designed to encourage safer driving, improve mobility and contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The town hall said all elements of the project will comply with Spain’s National Security Framework and existing data protection regulations, ensuring information collected by the system is securely transmitted and stored.
The expansion will make Estepona one of the most extensively monitored municipalities on the Costa del Sol, as local authorities continue investing in technology designed to improve both road safety and traffic management.
