Holidaymakers heading to Torremolinos can swim with confidence after new testing confirmed that all four of the resort’s main beaches have been awarded the highest possible rating for water quality.
The results come from a study carried out by the University of Malaga’s Coastal Sciences Chair in collaboration with Aguas de Torremolinos, which found that water and sand quality at the municipality’s beaches is ‘excellent’.
Researchers analysed samples taken from La Carihuela, Bajondillo, Playamar and Los Alamos, assessing both seawater in the most frequently used bathing areas and beach sediments where visitors typically lay their towels.
The samples were examined at the University of Malaga’s Faculty of Sciences using biological indicators required under Spanish and European regulations governing bathing water quality.
Scientists measured levels of E. coli bacteria and intestinal enterococci – two key indicators used to assess the sanitary condition of beaches.
According to the study, all samples returned results that fell within the highest classification category: excellent.
Testing every two weeks throughout summer
The monitoring programme will continue throughout the peak tourist season, with new samples being collected every 15 days until September 15.
The ongoing testing allows authorities to closely track water quality during the months when visitor numbers are at their highest.
The study forms part of a long-running initiative designed to ensure the health and safety of beach users while maintaining environmental standards across Torremolinos’ coastline.

Blue Flags retained for all four beaches
The positive findings come alongside further recognition for the municipality’s beaches.
For 2026, Los Alamos, Bajondillo, Playamar and La Carihuela-Montemar have all retained their Blue Flag status, one of Spain’s most prestigious beach quality awards.
The certification is awarded by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) and recognises beaches that meet strict standards relating to environmental management, sustainability, safety, facilities and accessibility.
Torremolinos has also retained the Q for Quality and S for Sustainability tourism certifications across all four beaches.
Town Hall officials said the awards reflect the municipality’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection, efficient management and maintaining high standards along one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular stretches of coastline.
