A dead body has been found floating in a port in Almeria.

The corpse was recovered from the water at the port of Garrucha at around 9.15am on Monday, emergency services confirmed.

The grim discovery was made after local authorities received reports of a body floating face down in the sea near the monument to the Virgen del Carmen.

According to Andalucia’s 112 emergency service, the alert was first received by Garrucha’s Civil Protection team, which then notified emergency coordinators.

The Guardia Civil was immediately deployed to the scene.

Civil Protection officials later confirmed that the body had been brought ashore and transferred to the town’s commercial port area.

No details have yet been released about the identity of the deceased.

The Guardia Civil has activated the judicial protocol that follows the discovery of a body, and an investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

Authorities have not released any further information.
