The man found dead in a pool of blood at his home in La Alcaidesa over the weekend was a British national aged between 60 and 70, it has emerged.
According to regional newspaper Europa Sur, his partner, an Algerian man aged between 20 and 30, remains in hospital under police guard.
The survivor of the incident is being treated at Hospital Universitario de La Linea de la Concepcion and is expected to remain there until he is medically discharged.
He will then be brought before a court as part of the ongoing investigation. The same sources indicated that his condition is not believed to be life-threatening.
The violent incident, reported to involve a machete and a hammer, has shocked residents of La Alcaidesa, one of the most exclusive residential developments in the Campo de Gibraltar area.
Located between the municipalities of San Roque and La Linea de la Concepcion, the area is known for its golf courses, coastal views and large international community, particularly residents from the UK and northern Europe.
Emergency services were first alerted at around 4.30pm on Saturday, June 6, after reports that a man had fallen from a property within the urbanisation.

Guardia Civil officers, Local Police from San Roque and emergency medical teams attended the scene. The injured man was taken to Hospital Universitario de La Linea de la Concepcion for treatment.
A short time later, emergency services received a second call reporting the discovery of a man’s body inside a property within the development.
Sources close to the investigation have told local media that the two men were in a relationship and had been living together in La Alcaidesa for several years.
The main line of enquiry is that a violent confrontation took place inside the property involving a machete and a hammer.
However, Guardia Civil investigators are continuing to gather evidence.
No formal charges have been announced and the investigation continues.
