Drivers across Malaga province are set to benefit from a major road improvement programme after the Junta de Andalucia approved €17.5million in funding to repair and resurface roads under its control.
The investment forms part of a wider €151.5million regional plan aimed at tackling deteriorating road surfaces across Andalucia and improving safety for motorists.
The Ministry of Development, Territorial Planning and Housing has now awarded two contracts covering different parts of Malaga province.
The largest contract, worth €9.6million, will focus on roads in the north and east of the province, while a second contract worth almost €7.9million will cover the west and south.
Acting regional minister Rocio Diaz said the Junta had made an unprecedented commitment to improving road conditions.
‘We have redoubled our efforts to act immediately on our roads, especially those in the worst condition,’ she said.
The works will target stretches of road identified as being in poor or very poor condition following a detailed assessment of Andalucía’s road network.
Planned improvements include repairing potholes and weakened road surfaces, resurfacing damaged carriageways, strengthening road foundations and laying new asphalt.
Road markings will also be repainted, while safety barriers, roadside markers and other protective infrastructure will be repaired or replaced where necessary.

The programme will additionally include maintenance of expansion joints on bridges and the replacement of traffic monitoring equipment.
The Junta says the investment is designed not only to improve driving comfort but also to enhance road safety and extend the lifespan of key transport routes throughout the province.
Officials have also left open the possibility of extending the contracts in the future, which could increase both the budget and the number of roads included in the scheme.
The latest announcement follows a separate €2.9 million resurfacing contract awarded at the end of last year for a number of Malaga roads already identified as requiring urgent attention.
