Large parts of inland Andalucia will remain under yellow weather alerts on Sunday as temperatures continue to climb towards the 40C mark in what forecasters are describing as an unusually intense heat episode for the end of May.
State weather agency Aemet has activated heat warnings across several areas of Sevilla, Cordoba and Jaen between 2pm and 7.59pm on Sunday.
The alerts affect the Campiña Sevillana, Campiña Cordobesa, Morena y Condado and Valle del Guadalquivir de Jaen regions, where maximum temperatures of 39C are forecast and could locally reach 40C.
The warnings come as Andalucia experiences its first significant heat event of 2026, with temperatures more commonly associated with the height of summer than the final days of May.
According to Aemet, the hottest conditions will be concentrated across the Guadalquivir Valley, where hot air and stable weather conditions continue to drive temperatures higher.
Meteorologists have warned that there is currently little sign of an immediate return to seasonal norms, with the heat expected to persist into the start of June.
The affected areas include wide parts of inland Sevilla province, the countryside surrounding Cordoba city and several districts in Jaen province, including the Guadalquivir Valley and Morena y Condado regions.

The latest alerts follow several consecutive days in which towns and cities such as Montoro, Andujar and Sevilla have ranked among the hottest places in Spain.
Temperatures have repeatedly climbed above 38C this week, while overnight minimums have also remained unusually high, raising the possibility of tropical nights in some areas.
Aemet has described the current spell as bringing temperatures more typical of the canícula – the hottest period of the Spanish summer, usually seen in July and August.
Health authorities are advising residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day and take extra precautions with elderly people, young children and those with underlying health conditions.
While coastal areas of Malaga and Almeria are expected to remain cooler, inland parts of Andalucia are likely to continue bearing the brunt of the early-season heat throughout the weekend.
