A worker who was seriously injured in an explosion at a hotel in Torremolinos has died after spending two months in hospital with severe burns.
The incident happened on February 20 in the machine room of a hotel that was not operating at the time.
Emergency services were called at around 8.35am after reports that a worker had suffered serious burns while carrying out maintenance work.
He was initially taken to the Regional Hospital of Malaga, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to the Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Sevilla, where he died this week.
Early investigations pointed to a fault in a hot water boiler system, where a steam pipe reportedly burst, causing the explosion and resulting in catastrophic burns.
Firefighters, paramedics and both local and national police attended the scene at the time of the incident.
Investigation ongoing
The case has been referred to Spain’s labour inspectorate, which will determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
The worker’s death comes two months after the explosion, after he was unable to recover from his injuries, turning the incident into a fatal workplace tragedy.
