The Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella has launched an internal investigation following the death of a man in its A&E waiting room on March 27.
According to sources cited by Diario Sur, the man arrived at the hospital suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea.
The unnamed patient, reported to be homeless, underwent an initial assessment before taking a seat to wait to be seen.
When medical staff later called his name, he did not respond.
It was only when another person in the waiting room noticed he had not moved for some time that the alarm was raised.
Staff were alerted and subsequently confirmed that the man had died.
Early indications suggest he may have suffered a heart attack, although this has not been officially confirmed.
The hospital has since opened an internal review to clarify exactly what happened, while the status of any potential police or judicial investigation has not been made public.
Sources close to the case have insisted there is no evidence at this stage of malpractice or negligence.
One source indicated that the man had not been waiting for an extended period before being called, although no precise timeframe has been given.
There are also suggestions he may have been suffering from a serious underlying illness.
In a statement, the Andalusian Health Service said it could not comment on individual cases due to data protection laws, but stressed that ‘established emergency care protocols were followed at all times and no anomalies or deficiencies were detected.’
It added that the hospital remains at the disposal of judicial authorities while the internal investigation continues.
