The Junta de Andalucia has confirmed that most of the region will return to in-person classes from Thursday, following days of disruption caused by heavy rain and flooding – but with important local exceptions.
Regional minister Antonio Sanz said the decision reflects weeks of accumulated rainfall rather than just current forecasts.
Huelva is the only province where all schools will be opened.
Where classes remain suspended
- Almeria: Entire province: in-person classes remain suspended.
- Cadiz: Sierra de Cadiz; Campo de Gibraltar.
- Cordoba: Subbetica; Campiña.
- Granada: Cuenca del Genil; Guadix–Baza.
- Jaen: Cazorla; Segura; Jaen city (Los Puentes area).
- Malaga: Comarca de Ronda; Costa del Sol; Guadalhorce Valley.
- Sevilla; Campiña; Sierra Sur; Lora; Carmona; Torre del Aguila
Additional local closures possible
The regional government warned that individual schools or municipalities outside the listed areas may also remain closed if they have suffered significant damage, including:
- Road closures
- Flooding
- Evacuations
Sanz stressed that if the ground were not already saturated after a prolonged series of storms, these suspensions would likely not be necessary.
However, with soils unable to absorb more water and further rain and strong winds forecast, authorities opted for caution in the most affected areas.
Officials say the situation will continue to be reviewed daily, depending on weather conditions and the state of local infrastructure.
