An Irish couple have been found dead in a jacuzzi at a home in eastern Spain by their two teenage children.

The man, aged 50, and woman, 45, were discovered at around 5pm on Tuesday at a property in Cullera, Valencia.

Their children, aged 14 and 15, found their parents naked and unresponsive before alerting a neighbour, who called the 112 emergency services.

The Guardia Civil’s Judicial Police homicide unit has taken charge of the investigation.

The cause of the couple’s deaths remains unknown, with investigators keeping several possibilities open.

Guardia Civil sources told EFE there were no apparent signs of violence on the bodies and that an accidental death has not been ruled out.

Investigators examine possible drug link

According to reports, the bodies had puncture-like marks, while investigators are examining whether drugs could have played a role in the deaths.

The marks had initially raised questions over possible injuries, but sources close to the investigation said there were no signs indicating that the couple had been violently attacked.

The bodies were removed from the property at around 11.30pm on Tuesday.

Post-mortem examinations are due to be carried out on Wednesday and are expected to provide crucial information about how the husband and wife died and whether drugs or another factor were involved.

The couple’s two children are understood to have special needs and have been placed in the care of Cullera council’s social services following the discovery.
