A dead body has been discovered floating in the sea off Granada.
The grisly find was made in Almuñecar on Sunday evening, a resort popular with British expats and tourists.
The remains were spotted around 7:30pm by a fisherman roughly 500 metres from shore, in waters off Cerro Gordo, an area that borders the provinces of Malaga and Granada.
The fisherman immediately alerted the emergency services after noticing a body floating face down in the water.
Emergency coordination quickly mobilised Maritime Rescue, the Guardia Civil, Policia Nacional and the 061 Health Emergency Centre.
A Salvamar rescue vessel recovered the body and transported it to the port of Caleta de Velez (Malaga).
From there, the remains were taken to Malaga’s Institute of Legal Medicine, where a post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause and time of death.
Authorities have not yet released details about the deceased. According to sources quoted by EFE, the body was found in an advanced state of decomposition, though preliminary indications suggest it may be female.
Investigators are awaiting the results of the autopsy before confirming further information.
The discovery comes less than a week after a separate grim find, when a body was found stuffed inside a sack in a reservoir in Almogia (Malaga).
