An inmate returning from temporary leave attempted to smuggle the largest stash of drugs ever intercepted at Archidona prison – all concealed inside condoms and hidden rectally.
The haul included 500 anabolic steroid pills, 15 grams of cocaine, and 20 grams of crack cocaine.
The attempt was foiled on Monday October 6, thanks to the coordinated efforts of prison staff and a sharp-eyed radiologist.
The inmate, housed in Module 1 and already under suspicion, was subjected to an X-ray on his return. The scan revealed several air-filled condoms inside his body.
Although this concealment method is commonly used to avoid detection by scanners, the vigilance of the Intervention and Operational Control Group (GICO), who had been monitoring the inmate closely, and the skill of the radiologist prevented the drugs from entering the prison system.
The prison workers’ union Tu Abandono Me Puede Matar (TAMPM) praised the professionalism of the staff involved, noting they ‘work without proper tools or institutional support.’
They also warned that the seizure could have serious consequences for the inmate who was expecting the delivery, given that drugs inside prison can sell for up to three times their street value.
TAMPM emphasised that the interception ‘has likely saved many lives.’
