A pair of Irish teenagers were arrested in Mallorca over the savage beating of a 71-year-old man and his grandson, it has emerged.
The 18 year olds are accused of attacking their victims – also Irish – for ‘no reason’ in the resort of Santa Ponsa, Calvia, at the end of July.
A report released this week by local police and the Guardia Civil said the elderly man suffered severe facial fractures and required emergency surgery, while the young victim, 20, was left unconscious for several minutes.
Both were chased down the street and received a torrent of punches and kicks after being knocked to the ground.
According to victim and witness statements, two young Irish men entered a tattoo parlour located on Calle Ramon de Montcada in Santa Ponsa in the early hours of the morning.
The men allegedly began threatening the staff and customers, including a fellow Irishman and several of his relatives, for no apparent reason, shouting ‘what are you looking at? Do you want to fight?’
Workers kicked the youngsters out, only for them to wait outside for around 40 minutes.
When the victims left and headed toward the apartment where they were staying, the two attackers and six of their friends began following them.
According to the police report, the younger victim pleaded that they be left alone, which is when the attackers launched their assault outside a fast food restaurant in front of crowds.
Witnesses immediately called in police, who quickly arrived at the scene and treated the victims while the attackers fled on foot.
The two suspects were arrested for assault within minutes after being intercepted by a nearby patrol car.
They were dragged before a court in Palma the following day, where they were granted a €2,000 bail.
The suspects were transferred to a prison before being released six hours later.
The two victims were taken by ambulance to a clinic in Palma. The younger man also suffered facial injuries but was released that same day.
