A new power outage has left tens of thousands of people without power in the Canary Islands.
The blackout is currently affecting the island of La Palma, with up to 30,000 people expected to be affected, reports La Radio Canaria.
The cause of the outage remains unknown but the investigation is focusing on the Los Guinchos power plant, reports La Sexta.
Minister of Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, told Al Rojo Vivo: ‘We have been told that a substation has been affected.
‘Red Electrica has notified us and told us that the system will be restored in 45 minutes.’
According to sources from the Ministry of Energy Transition, the blackout occurred at 9.47 am, and affects municipalities such as Santa Cruz de La Palma, Los Llanos de Aridane, Breña Alta, and Puntallana, among others.
The La Palma Island Council itself has confirmed the blackout and has recommended that residents remain calm, not overload emergency services, and prioritise saving battery life on all devices.
The Director General of Energy of the Canary Islands Government, Alberto Hernandez, is leading the charge to resolve the power cut.
