An Estepona restaurant specialising in cooking over hot coals has been named among Spain’s 30 best grills by Tapas magazine.
El Carnicero 1993, in Cancelada, features in the publication’s national selection more than three decades after opening.
Its menu includes Argentine wagyu skirt steak, rib-eye, tomahawk, dry-aged bone-in steak and fillet, alongside fresh fish and seasonal vegetables.
Cooking over embers has remained central to the restaurant’s approach since it opened in 1993.
Antonio de Juan, president of Grupo La Murga, said the recognition reflected both that longstanding commitment and the expertise of its staff.
‘You can have a great product, but if you don’t know how to handle it, the fire exposes that immediately,’ he said.

He added that the Tapas selection had particular significance because it recognised a style of cooking the restaurant had championed since 1993, as well as a team familiar with both the ingredients and the coals.
The restaurant’s history is linked to Belgian businessman Philippe Libioulle, who founded the establishment after arriving on the Costa del Sol in the 1990s.
Its inclusion puts Cancelada on a national list celebrating restaurants specialising in the grill.
