A waterspout drew attention off Malaga’s coastline on Monday as Storm Adam brought heavy rain and thunderstorms to the province.
Residents took to social media to share photos of the rotating funnel, which was was visible from Torremolinos, La Malagueta and Huelin.
Often described as ‘tornados at sea’, waterspouts are rotating columns of air extending between a cloud and the water’s surface.
Their distinctive funnel shape can become more visible as spray and droplets swirl above the sea.
However, they do not all form in the same way or reach the same intensity as tornadoes on land.
Some develop within thunderstorms, while others form in less turbulent conditions.
Although often short-lived, waterspouts can pose a danger to boats and anyone in the water, making it important to keep a safe distance.
Monday’s sighting added to the dramatic weather scenes across Malaga as the storm brought downpours and hail to parts of the province.
