A young man was shot in broad daylight in central Malaga on Friday before fleeing into a nearby supermarket and begging for help.

The shooting occurred at around 11.40am in the Barcenillas area, close to the city’s La Victoria neighbourhood.

Several witnesses called the 112 emergency service after hearing gunshots near Calle Pinosol and Plaza Virgen del Rocio.

Residents reportedly heard at least two shots before a wounded man ran into a nearby Dia supermarket shouting for help.

He is understood to have been sitting in the area when he was struck by the bullets.

Paramedics treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to a hospital in Malaga, where he underwent surgery for gunshot wounds.

No official update on his condition had been released by Friday afternoon.

The Policia Nacional launched a search for the gunman, who had fled before emergency services arrived.

A suspect was later located and arrested on suspicion of involvement in the shooting.

Preliminary reports suggest another person may also have participated, although police have not officially confirmed that a second suspect is being sought.

Investigators are working to establish what triggered the attack and the relationship, if any, between the victim and the detained man.

The shooting happened during the late-morning rush in a busy residential part of Malaga’s Centro district.
