A strike by Renfe workers on Friday is expected to affect thousands of rail passengers across Andalucia.
The walkout, called by the Sindicato Ferroviario trade union, will run from midnight until 11.59pm and involves train drivers and onboard staff.
The union says the strike is in protest over what it describes as the ‘dangerous situation’ faced by staff and passengers due to faulty air conditioning systems on trains.
With the industrial action coinciding with the summer holiday period and the start of the weekend, the Ministry of Transport has imposed minimum service levels to keep much of the rail network operating.
However, passengers should note that these represent the minimum guaranteed services. Additional trains may still run depending on how many staff actually take part in the strike.
Renfe said the previous two strikes organised by the same union attracted relatively low participation rates of 1.8% and 2.1%.
Cercanias
In Andalucia, Cercanias services in Sevilla, Malaga and Cadiz will operate at 75% of normal capacity during peak hours and 50% for the remainder of the day.
Peak service periods will generally run between 6am and 9am, around 1.30pm to 4pm, and 6.30pm to 8.30pm, although these times vary slightly between networks.
Media Distancia
A minimum of 65% of Media Distancia services will operate nationwide.
Guaranteed routes in Andalucia include:
- Sevilla-Malaga
- Sevilla-Granada
- Malaga-Granada
- Sevilla-Cadiz
- Sevilla-Cordoba
- Sevilla-Jaen
- Sevilla-Huelva
- Granada-Almeria
- Antequera-Algeciras
Several local rail services around Cordoba and the Rabanales University Campus will also continue to operate.
High-speed and long-distance trains
For Alta Velocidad and Larga Distancia services, 73% of the normal timetable has been guaranteed.
Renfe is advising all passengers to check the status of their specific train before travelling to the station, as the final timetable will depend on both the minimum service schedule and the actual level of participation in the strike.
