Plans to create a continuous coastal walking route along Granada’s coastline have taken another major step forward after a new section of the Senda del Litoral in Salobreña was officially awarded.
The latest phase, costing more than €1million, will eventually help connect Salobreña with neighbouring Motril, bringing the long-term vision of an uninterrupted pedestrian route along the Costa Tropical closer to reality.
The project was announced by the President of Granada Provincial Council, Francis Rodriguez, during a visit to Salobreña alongside the town’s mayor, Javier Ortega.
Although the contracts have now been awarded and the works could technically begin immediately, construction will not start until after the summer to avoid disrupting residents and the thousands of visitors who flock to the area’s beaches during the peak holiday season.
Rodriguez described the Senda del Litoral as a project that will improve sustainable mobility while showcasing Granada province’s natural coastline.
‘The Senda del Litoral is a commitment to territorial cohesion, sustainable mobility and enhancing the extraordinary natural resources of the Costa Tropical,’ he said.
‘We are working to connect Granada’s entire coastline through an accessible route that respects the environment while becoming a major tourist attraction and an engine for economic growth.’
Mayor Javier Ortega welcomed the progress, describing it as the fulfilment of a long-standing ambition to link Salobreña and Motril via the seafront.
Two new sections
The project has been divided into two sections.
The first begins at La Guardia Beach, following the outer edge of the beach before joining Salobreña’s existing promenade.
From there, the route continues through the town, crosses the Guadalfeo River and finishes at La Cagailla Beach.
The second section starts at La Cagailla and continues towards the Motril municipal boundary, where it will eventually connect with Playa Granada near the golf course.
Until planned beach regeneration works are completed, walkers will temporarily be diverted along the Camino de los Pescadores, before a permanent wooden boardwalk is built in front of the Hotel Impressive.
Progress continues in Almuñecar
The announcement follows ongoing construction work on the first phase of the Senda del Litoral in Almuñecar, where crews are continuing to build viewing areas, safety barriers and walking surfaces around Cerro Gordo, Cantarrijan and the stretch between the Hotel Best Alcazar and the Peñon del Lobo viewpoint.
The wider Senda del Litoral project aims to create a continuous coastal route linking Granada’s beaches and seaside towns, providing a new attraction for walkers and cyclists while promoting sustainable tourism and improving access to the Costa Tropical’s natural landscapes.
