July is one of the busiest months of the year for traditional festivals in Malaga province, with around 20 municipalities celebrating local public holidays alongside religious processions, village fairs and cultural events.

Many of this month’s celebrations centre around Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Virgen del Carmen) on July 16, one of the Costa del Sol’s most important religious festivals and the patron saint of fishermen and seafarers.

Others coincide with the feast days of Santiago and Santa Ana later in the month.

Here’s where the biggest celebrations will be taking place.

Campillos: July 10

Campillos is the first municipality in Malaga province to enjoy a local holiday in July.

The day marks the Fiestas de San Benito Abad, honouring the town’s patron saint with religious events, live music and fairground attractions.

Virgen del Carmen celebrations: July 16

July 16 is the most widely celebrated local holiday of the month, particularly in coastal towns where the Virgen del Carmen is honoured with maritime processions.

Local holidays take place in Benalmadena, Estepona, Fuengirola, Rincon de la Victoria, Torremolinos, Cuevas de San Marcos and Montecorto.

One of the most famous events is in Benalmadena, where the Virgen del Carmen meets the Virgen Chiquita in a procession that has been declared a Festival of Provincial Tourist Interest.

In many seaside towns, statues of the Virgin are carried through the streets before being taken into the sea aboard fishing boats in colourful maritime processions.

Manilva: July 17

Rather than observing the holiday on July 16, Manilva has moved its local holiday to Friday, July 17, giving residents a three-day weekend.

The town still celebrates the Virgen del Carmen as patron saint of its fishing community.

Sayalonga: July 20

After hosting the Corumbela Fair from July 3 to 5, Sayalonga’s official local holiday falls on Monday, July 20, coinciding with the town’s annual summer fair.

Gaucin: July 24

Gaucin celebrates the Festival del Corcho Valle del Genal on Friday, July 24.

The cork festival, recognised as a Festival of Provincial Tourist Interest since 2004, celebrates one of the region’s traditional industries with demonstrations, music and local food.

Velez-Malaga: July 24

Velez-Malaga also observes a local holiday on July 24 to celebrate Santiago and Santa Ana, the city’s patron saints.

Six towns celebrate on July 27

July 27 is another key date, with local holidays taking place in:

• Almachar, during celebrations for Nuestra Señora del Amparo.
• Alozaina, marking the end of its fair honouring Santiago and Santa Ana.
• Competa, during its Cultural Week dedicated to Santa Ana.
• La Viñuela, during its annual fair.
• Moclinejo, celebrating its local festivities.
• Salares, which also marks its annual fair.

Villanueva de Algaidas and Parauta: July 31

The final local holidays of the month fall on Friday, July 31.

Villanueva de Algaidas celebrates its annual fair, which runs from July 30 to August 2, while Parauta marks its traditional patron saint festivities.
