The body of a man has been discovered on a beach in Torrevieja.
The grisly discovery was made on Monday on Playa de La Sal in the La Mata area.
Authorities are now working to establish his identity and determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to Guardia Civil sources, the body was in an advanced state of decomposition.
Investigators said there were no obvious signs of violence during the initial examination.
It is believed the man may have been travelling aboard a vessel carrying irregular migrants that later got into difficulty at sea.
However, authorities have stressed that the investigation remains at an early stage and no conclusions have yet been reached.
Further information is expected once the post-mortem examination has been completed.
