A series of orange weather alerts have been issued across parts of the Murcia region this Thursday amid fears of torrential rain, thunderstorms and possible hail.
The warnings affect several areas of the region, including Vega del Segura, Campo de Cartagena y Mazarron and the Altiplano de Murcia, where forecasters are warning of intense downpours capable of causing local flooding.
According to Aemet, some areas could see between 30mm and 35mm of rain falling in just one hour.
The highest warning level currently in place is for heavy rainfall, classified as a ‘significant danger’ under Aemet’s weather warning system.
The orange alerts will remain active throughout much of Thursday, with timings varying slightly depending on the zone.
In Campo de Cartagena and Mazarron, the warning is active from 10am until 8.59pm, with rainfall accumulation potentially reaching 35mm in a single hour.
Meanwhile, Vega del Segura and the Altiplano de Murcia are under alert from midday until 8.59pm, with forecasts warning of up to 30mm of rain within an hour.
Aemet has also activated yellow warnings for thunderstorms across the same areas, cautioning that the storms could be accompanied by hail and ‘occasionally very strong wind gusts’.

The warnings come as unstable weather spreads across large parts of eastern and southern Spain, bringing a sharp contrast to the unusually warm conditions experienced in recent days.
Drivers are being urged to take extra care on roads vulnerable to flash flooding, while residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the most intense storms.
Murcia and neighbouring parts of the Mediterranean coast are particularly susceptible to sudden flooding episodes during heavy rain events due to dry ground conditions and urban drainage pressures.
