This is the moment migrants attempted to force their way into Gambia’s Madrid Embassy after queuing overnight for key regularisation papers.
Footage shared online shows mostly young men climbing over the wall of the building after tensions flared on Wednesday morning.
The incident unfolded at around 10am on Calle Hernandez Iglesias, in the city’s central district.
A group of people climbed the embassy’s entrance gate in an attempt to force their way inside and bypass the queue.
Officers from the Policia Nacional’s Prevention and Response Unit (UPR) were deployed to the scene.
According to police sources cited by El Publico, the situation quickly de-escalated once officers arrived and no arrests were made.
The crowd had gathered to obtain a ‘certificate of vulnerability’, one of the routes migrants can use to apply for legal status in Spain.
The process is part of a wider government plan to regularise undocumented migrants, alongside other pathways such as family ties or proof of long-term residence.
Despite the brief chaos, order was restored without further incident.
However, the episode highlights growing pressure on administrative systems as demand for regularisation continues to rise, with some regional authorities already warning that resources may be stretched.
The JUPOL police union blasted the incident, writing in a post on X: ‘No, it’s not Africa: it’s the Gambian embassy in Madrid.
‘This is all a consequence of the government’s regularisation process for undocumented immigrants, which is generating utter chaos in much of the country – something entirely predictable, by the way.
‘We fully support our colleagues deployed to restore public order both here and in other parts of Spain, such as Murcia.’
