The Benahavis wildfire has been stabilised after a two-day firefighting operation.

The Infoca service confirmed the major breakthrough at around 7.30pm on Monday, allowing the remaining evacuated residents of Montemayor and Benahavis Hills, as well as the property known as La Coja, to return home.

The regional emergency plan has now been downgraded to the pre-emergency phase, operational situation 0.

Firefighters remain on the ground consolidating the perimeter and extinguishing hot spots to prevent the blaze from reigniting.

The fire, which broke out near the Ermita del Rosario at around 12.37pm on Sunday, has affected an estimated perimeter of 300 hectares.

At its height, the emergency forced authorities to order residents across the centre of Benahavis to remain indoors, while around 50 people from some 20 homes in Montemayor Alto were evacuated as a precaution.

The stay-at-home order for the town itself was lifted at 8am on Monday after firefighters made significant progress overnight.

Now the remaining evacuees have also been given the green light to return.

Three people injured

The fire left three people injured, including a 78-year-old man who suffered burns to between 30% and 35% of his body while reportedly trying to tackle the flames himself.

He was initially transferred to Malaga Regional Hospital before being admitted to the burns unit at the Virgen del Rocio University Hospital in Sevilla, where he is reported to be in a stable condition.

A forest firefighter also suffered a broken wrist after falling, while another person was treated for smoke inhalation.

Despite the scale of the blaze, authorities said no homes were destroyed.

There was, however, isolated damage to exterior elements including fences, terraces and access points.
