This is the moment chaos erupted outside a centre issuing documents for Spain’s migrant regularisation process in Murcia on Tuesday.
The incident took place on Calle Urano in the San Pio X district, specifically outside the Rumiñahui association.
It is one of the many locations authorised to provide the so-called ‘certificate of vulnerability’. The document is one of the main routes migrants can use to apply for legal status.
According to police union representative Adrian Rodriguez, the situation escalated due to pressure in the queue, with large numbers of people waiting to be seen.
Initial officers from the Police Response Unit (GOR) attended the scene, but reinforcements were later requested as the situation became harder to manage, repots La Opinion de Murcia.
Government sources said the Policia Nacional intervened to clear space, organise the queue and ensure safety, stressing that there were no arrests or serious incidents.
The union had previously warned that scenes like this were likely. Rodriguez said the system is under strain, pointing out that only around 70% of positions in the immigration unit are currently filled.
‘We were expecting this, and now we’re starting to see the first problems,’ he said.
Demand has surged sharply. Murcia City Council confirmed it processed 1,463 vulnerability reports in just one week, a 70% increase compared to the same period last year.
The current regularisation process began online on April 16, with in-person services starting on April 20.
The Rumiñahui centre only began issuing certificates this week, prompting dozens of people to queue from early morning, with some reportedly sleeping outside overnight.
Police vans and an ambulance were deployed to the area, with both Policia Nacional and Local Police maintaining a preventive presence at centres handling documentation.
Local authorities have also called for more resources, warning that the process has been rolled out without sufficient planning.
Cleaning services in the area have been stepped up as the neighbourhood deals with the sudden influx of people.
