‘This isn’t Disneyland’: Sevilla residents blast Americans after soon-to-be expat asked if €7,000 per month after tax ‘will be enough’

Between mid‑2024 and mid‑2025, property prices in Sevilla increased by between 5.7 % and 11.9 % year‑on‑year

A soon-to-be expat has been slammed after asking what they thought was an innocent question about the cost of living in Andalucia.

Specifically, they wanted to know if €7,000 would be enough to live on in Sevilla, the capital of the region.

The poster wrote: ‘Me, my husband and 14-year-old are moving to Sevilla next spring.

‘Together we will have €7,000 per month after tax – would this be enough to live comfortably on? We already have private medical insurance.’

While some of the replies simply said ‘yes’ or ‘you will be fine’, others were less than kind.

The post by the soon-to-be expat sparked a strong backlash

Despite the nationality of the poster not being revealed, their question unleashed a wave of comments blasting US expats.

‘How daft can you be to ask such a question when you know the minimum wage in Sevilla?,’ wrote one, ‘it’s giving American.’

Another said: ‘What’s happening to this page, every second post recently is people asking ”would this be enough?” Is everyone making a runner from the US?’

One local fumed: ‘That’s why prices and rents are exploding, people moving somewhere with big money without making any research, like they’re going to Disneyland and get everything over locals’ heads.’

Another expat said: ‘No wonder Andalucia prices have gone up so much, I feel sorry for locals who do not have inherited assets or high-salaried jobs.’

Looking to calm the backlash, one local said ‘no one is going to stop you from moving to Sevilla and living your best life.’

However, she added: ‘But also please be considerate: support local businesses, learn the language and please don’t buy properties to make Airbnbs, it’s ruining everything.’ Another asked if the post was ‘rage bait’.

Equally, the rental market has seen pressure. By the end of 2024, the average rent in Sevilla reached €12 per m², up roughly 9.5 % from the previous year.

In 2025, average rents are often around €12.3/m², making an 80 m² flat cost nearly €980–1,000/month (excluding utilities).

According to the Spanish Statistical Office, the average base salary in Sevilla is €23,154 per year.

This equates to between €1,650 and €1,900 per month, depending on whether salaries are paid over 12 or 14 months.
