How to get discounted holidays as a pensioner in Spain: Ultimate guide to the Imserso scheme – with just days left to apply

​If you’re a pensioner residing in Spain, you may be eligible to participate in the Instituto de Mayores y Servicios Sociales (Imserso) travel programme.

This government-subsidised initiative offers affordable holiday packages across the country, aiming to promote active ageing and social engagement among seniors.​

There is no requirement on nationality, meaning, Brits, Americans or other residents can also apply.

Eligibility criteria

To qualify for the Imserso travel programme, you must:

  • Be a legal resident of Spain.
  • Meet one of the following conditions:
  • Receive a retirement pension from the Spanish Social Security system.
  • Be a widow or widower aged 55 or older receiving a pension from the Spanish Social Security system.
  • Be aged 60 or older and receive unemployment benefits or other subsidies from the Spanish Social Security system.
  • Be aged 65 or older and be insured or a beneficiary of the Spanish Social Security system.​

If you qualify, you can bring your spouse or partner, regardless of their eligibility. Some disabled children may also accompany their parents, provided they travel together and share accommodation. ​

Available packages

The Imserso programme offers various travel options across Spain, including:​

Coastal Areas: Destinations in Andalusia, Catalonia, Murcia, and the Valencian Community.

Islands: Trips to the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Cultural and Nature Tours: Excursions to provincial capitals, cultural circuits, and nature tourism.​

Trips typically range from four to 10 days and include accommodation, meals, insurance, and some sightseeing activities. Prices vary depending on the destination and duration.

Mainland coastal resorts:

Seven nights with transport: €228.93

Nine nights with transport: €290.07

Balearic Islands:

Seven nights with transport: €267.63

Nine nights with transport: €331.49

Canary Islands:

Seven nights with transport: €355.30

Nine nights with transport: €435.95

Short Getaways:

Four-day city breaks: starting from €124.68​

How to apply

Applications for the 2024–2025 season are open until May 2025, meaning you have just a few days left to apply for this year.

You can apply online via the Imserso website portal by clicking here.

If you’ve participated in previous seasons, you should receive a renewal letter with your personal details and destination preferences. To make any changes, return the form within the specified period.
