An earthquake on the Costa Blanca left Brits and locals terrified late on Monday night.

At around 20 past midnight, a series of tremors shook the resort of Torrevieja, a British expat haven about an hour’s drive south of Alicante city.

The epicentre was an estimated 5km deep, according to the Instituto Geografico Nacional (National Geographic Institute).

Provisional estimates by scientists said the quake measured a three on the Richter scale.

Local Matias Web said on X: ‘Note that I’m used to these types of events, and this was a very loud noise, as if rocks had been breaking deep underground (this is what is often felt when tectonic plates shift). We were probably very close to the epicentre.’

One Spaniard wrote: ‘My whole house shook!’, while another simply said: ‘I’m terrified.’

‘In Orihuela Costa there was a lot of noise and vibrations,’ another claimed.

The epicentre was an estimated 5km below the ground in Torrevieja, according to the Instituto Geografico Nacional (National Geographic Institute).

Another added: ‘It was pretty noticeable, it was short but strong’, while another claimed: ‘I nearly fell out of my bed!’

Another local said: ‘Well, an earthquake just woke me up here at home in Torrevieja. 3.1 degrees of power from what I read. What an unpleasant feeling. I’m freaked out….’
