Spanish police are preparing a ‘special operation’ in Benidorm ahead of an influx of British tourists over Easter.

The Costa Blanca resort is expecting an ‘extremely high’ occupancy rate over the next week, according to hotel association Hosbec.

Thousands of Brits, Germans and other tourists are expected to descend on the Alicante hotspot as part of the big Easter getaway, which kicks off on Friday.

In preparation, State Security Forces have planned special measures to increase the safety of tourists.

It comes after the Spanish Eye reported a string of recent incidents in the resort, including a British mother who claimed she was attacked by a bouncer.

This paper also revealed how a group of women are targeting male tourists in so-called ‘muggers alley’, sparking police to issue advice to holidaymakers.

A statement by Benidorm City Council said: ‘During these dates (Easter), contacts and meetings between the Policia Nacional, Policia Local and leaders of tourism businesses… will be intensified.’

It said the ‘collaboration’ of the industry is ‘important’ to help ‘maintain public safety in Benidorm’, which it said is known as the ‘capital of tourism’.

No further details were revealed about the ‘special operation’, but tourists can expect to see an extra police presence on the streets.

Last year, Benidorm received around three million visitors, and saw a 2.9% year-on-year increase in overnight stays.
