A series of weather alerts have been issued for the southern Spain and the Canary Islands on Wednesday as Storm Olivier rolls in from the Atlantic.

State weather agency Aemet has issued an orange warning for rainfall across all Canary Islands, bar Gran Canaria, which is on a yellow alert.

The archipelago is facing accumulated rainfall of 30mm in one hour on Wednesday, accompanied by strong winds and thunder.

The orange warning begins at 6am and will remain in effect until at least 3pm.

The yellow alerts in Cadiz are in place between 6pm and midnight.

Aemet said Storm Olivier will ‘generate instability’, bringing ‘cloud cover and precipitation to all the islands’.

The Canary Islands’ General Directorate of Security and Emergencies has declared a pre-alert situation for flooding, starting at midnight on Wednesday.

It comes as the tip of southern Spain will also be under alert on Wednesday.

The Mediterranean coast of Cadiz is on a yellow warning for winds of up to 80km/hr, while its Atlantic side will see gusts of up to 70km/hr, as will some of the province’s inland areas.

The yellow alerts in Cadiz are in place between 6pm and midnight.
