A man who was shot in the middle of the street in Malaga city has died of his injuries at hospital.
The 20-year-old received a bullet to his leg and back at around 11.40am on Friday.
In a gangland-style assassination, he was ambushed near his home in the Barcenillas area of the La Victoria neighbourhood.
The zone is near to Plaza de la Merced, an area popular with tourists.
Three men approached the victim out of nowhere and began opening fire, a police report said.
Despite suffering at least two bullet wounds, the victim managed to seek refuge inside a nearby Dia supermarket in Plaza Virgen del Rocio.
Witnesses called the 112 emergency service after hearing gunfire around Calle Pinosol and seeing the injured man enter the shop.
Paramedics rushed him to a hospital in Malaga, where he underwent emergency surgery.
However, he succumbed to his injuries several hours later.
Policia Nacional officers have arrested three people suspected of carrying out the fatal attack.
The rapid response of uniformed patrol officers led to the first suspect being captured within minutes of the shooting.
The other two men fled the scene, triggering an urgent search across Malaga province.
Specialist officers from UDYCO Costa del Sol, the police unit responsible for drugs and organised crime, and GRECO Costa del Sol, which targets organised criminal groups, took over the investigation.
Detectives identified a home in Malaga city allegedly used by the first detainee.
A police raid on the property led to the arrest of the second suspected attacker.
Investigators then identified the third man, who had changed his clothes and appearance while attempting to evade capture.
Police mounted a large operation to find him and located him on a street in Fuengirola at around 11pm.
Police have not disclosed a possible motive or said whether the victim knew the alleged attackers.
The daylight ambush and the involvement of specialist organised-crime units suggest investigators are examining whether the shooting formed part of a wider criminal dispute, but no such link has yet been officially confirmed.
The investigation has been named Operation Brown and remains open.
Police are understood to be searching for the firearm used during the attack.
