The Guardia Civil has launched a public appeal to help reunite pets separated from their owners during the devastating Almeria wildfire.

As emergency workers continue searching for victims, officers are also rescuing dogs and pets found wandering through the burned landscape.

In a social media appeal, the force asked anyone who has lost a pet – or who finds a disorientated animal – to come forward.

It said it is working alongside FURIA Animal Protection, which is coordinating the rescue, care and reunification of animals with their families.

Owners searching for missing pets, or members of the public who have found an animal, are being asked to contact the organisation on 603 148 989.

‘We are requesting the public’s collaboration to help locate and recover pets affected by the wildfire,’ the Guardia Civil said.

‘If you have lost your pet or find a disorientated or unidentified dog or other domestic animal, please contact FURIA Animal Protection, which is coordinating the operation with other animal welfare organisations.’

The force also urged people to share the appeal as widely as possible to maximise the chances of reuniting animals with their owners.

The appeal comes as the wildfire’s human toll continues to mount.

At least 12 people have died, while emergency services continue searching burned homes and isolated rural properties for anyone still unaccounted for.

DNA testing is now underway in Madrid to formally identify the victims.
