Forecasters are warning of 46C highs in parts of Spain next week as a second powerful heat dome takes hold over western Europe.
Weather models suggest the current heatwave will be followed by an even more persistent period of exceptionally hot weather from early July, with an ‘Omega blocking’ pattern expected to trap scorching air over the Iberian Peninsula for several days.
Some meteorologists are forecasting temperatures of 44C to 46C across inland areas of Andalucia and neighbouring regions between July 7 and 10, potentially threatening July temperature records if the latest model runs verify.
While forecasts that far ahead remain subject to change, confidence is growing that Spain will remain under the influence of a prolonged area of high pressure well into next week.
The latest weather maps show much of the Iberian Peninsula covered by temperatures significantly above seasonal averages, with Portugal expected to bear the brunt of the next heat dome after largely escaping the current one.
Alerts already in place across Andalucia
The extreme conditions are already beginning to build.
State weather agency Aemet as issued yellow heat alerts for Tuesday this week across several parts of Andalucia – although conditions are expected to get hotter from Thursday.
The warnings will be in force between 1pm and 9pm on Tuesday.
The areas under alert are much of Sevilla, Cordoba, Huelva and Jaen provinces, where highs could exceed 40C in some zones.

Although the Costa del Sol and much of the Mediterranean coastline will remain cooler thanks to sea breezes, inland Andalucia is once again expected to experience some of the highest temperatures in Europe.
Health authorities advise residents and tourists to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours as the heat intensifies.
