Pedro Sanchez has vowed to ‘continue fighting’ for LGBT+ rights.
The Spanish prime minister made the vow in a video message celebrating pride day on Sunday (June 28).
It comes just days after Congress voted to jail practitioners of so-called gay conversion therapy.
Sanchez said: ‘Spain leads, for the first time, the rainbow map, which gives a ranking in Europe of rights and liberties of the LGBTI collective.
‘We have gone from ninth position to first, since we (PSOE) arrive to the government.
‘And this is thanks to those who fight, most of all, all of you, so that no one has to suffer fear, nor violence or any type of discrimination.
‘But it’s also true that we cannot let our guard down.
‘There are still those who accept pride reluctantly, who don’t hesitate to step on rights and liberties, and who in 2026, still consider homosexuality an illness.
‘It seems to upset them that we live in the best country to be and to love in freedom.
‘But we keep marching on. Just this week, congress approved the penalisation of conversion therapy practitioners – with the usual people voting against it.
‘Therefore we keep fighting, continue leading and we will stay proud… happy pride day.’
