A four-year-old British boy has died after being found in the swimming pool of a holiday rental property in Malaga.
The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday morning at a rural holiday home in Periana, in a remote area of the Axarquia municipality, sending shockwaves through the local community.
According to sources close to the investigation cited by Diario Sur, the child was staying at the property with his parents, who are understood to be British nationals.
The boy was reportedly the couple’s only child.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving an alert, but despite their efforts they were unable to save the youngster’s life.
Investigators believe the child died by drowning in the villa’s swimming pool.
The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
While early indications point towards an accidental death, officers are continuing their enquiries and will await the results of a post-mortem examination before officially determining the cause of death.
The child’s body remained at the property awaiting judicial authorisation for its removal before being transferred to Malaga’s Institute of Legal Medicine.
