A major crash involving eight vehicles caused huge traffic jams on the Costa del Sol this Wednesday morning, with queues stretching up to 12km.
The collision happened at around 8am during rush hour on the A-7 motorway near Torremolinos, close to the junction with the AP-7 and a nearby petrol station, according to the DGT.
Emergency services said seven cars and a lorry were involved in the chain-reaction crash. Two people suffered injuries, including a 29-year-old woman who was taken to Malaga’s Hospital Clinico for treatment.
Fortunately, there were no reports of anyone being trapped in their vehicles or seriously hurt.
The accident caused severe disruption because two of the motorway’s three lanes heading towards Malaga were blocked by the damaged vehicles, leaving only one lane open to traffic.
Long queues quickly built up, with tailbacks reaching around 12 kilometres in the direction of Malaga and a further five kilometres towards Cadiz due to what Spanish authorities describe as the ‘rubbernecking effect’ from drivers slowing down to look at the crash scene.
Firefighters from Torremolinos, Guardia Civil officers, paramedics and an ambulance were all dispatched to the scene.

Traffic was eventually cleared later in the morning and the motorway fully reopened.
The incident was the latest in a string of crashes to hit the Costa del Sol’s busiest roads in recent days.
Another accident on the A-7 near La Cala del Moral in Rincon de la Victoria also caused delays of up to two kilometres heading towards Malaga city on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, drivers experienced further slow-moving traffic near San Pedro de Alcantara, another notorious bottleneck on the coast.
The repeated incidents have once again highlighted growing congestion problems on the Costa del Sol’s motorway network, particularly during peak commuting hours.
