THE wet weather will return to much of Spain this week after a brief respite from the rain over the weekend.

Rainfall is already expected in the Canary Islands today and Tuesday, according to meteorologists at El Tiempo.

On Wednesday, this is expected to expand into the west of mainland Spain, with the potential arrival of Storm Nuria.

The Atlantic storm will cause rain across the Mediterranean coast, including the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca.

The El Tiempo report says: ‘Showers will be most likely between the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community, although they will then spread inland and, later, with the arrival of a front through Galicia and Portugal, to other areas of the western peninsula.

‘Between Wednesday and Friday, we will notice the storm approaching and likely intensifying.

‘Rainfall will continue to blow in from west to east, and we will also notice the southwesterly winds strengthening with strong gusts in many areas of the western third of the peninsula.

‘Waves are also expected to increase along the western coasts of the peninsula and in the Canary Islands.

‘The main accumulations throughout the week will be recorded in the west of the peninsula, with amounts of more than 40 liters per square metre in areas of Extremadura and western Andalucia.’

El Tiempo warned there are more storms to come after what would be Storm Nuria, if experts decide it is strong enough to be named.

However it is too soon to decide how strong they will be.
