This is the moment a tourist was left shaking with fear after being chased by a monkey atop the Rock of Gibraltar.
Video footage shared on TikTok shows the Spanish youngster stepping away from a macaque as it tries to snatch her black tote bag.
She then starts running away at speed as she realised the creature is not going to give up so easily.
The camera then pans to her hiding behind a wall while cowering behind her friend, visibly crying.
The caption reads in Spanish: ‘She’s having an anxiety attack while the monkey is like ‘come here I won’t do anything to you.”
The video was shared by the TikTok account @cristiinarh2, which has since been deleted.
The roughly 300 monkeys in Gibraltar are Barbary macaques, and they are one of the most iconic attractions of the British Overseas Territory.
They are the only wild monkey population in Europe and live primarily on the Upper Rock of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve.
They are clustered in several social groups, are believed to have been introduced from North Africa, although their exact origin remains a topic of debate.
The specimens in Gibraltar are tailless, highly social, and intelligent primates who have become well-adapted to human presence.
They are famed for their bold interactions with tourists which sees them stealing food or personal items.
They are looked after by local authorities who feed them and treat them for conditions where appropriate.
And while they may seem fun to play with, tourists are warned to not feed or provoke them, as they are capable to turning aggressive.
