Drivers in Spain have been warned of an ‘intensive surveillance campaign’ by the Spanish traffic authority.

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) announced this week that it will be ramping up patrols to catch speeders.

It said the increased checks will last until April 13 and will take place across the country.

The Guardia Civil’s ‘Trafico’ force has installed extra radars on all types of roads, including motorways and dual carriageways.

It will also be monitoring cars from the skies, using police helicopters equipped with special cameras that can detect a vehicle’s speed from above.

The DGT reminded drivers that exceeding the speed limit can result in fines of up to €600, as well as points lost on their licence.

The new campaign is timed with the great Easter get away that will begin on Friday ahead of Semana Santa (Holy Week).

Millions of people will be travelling home or to see family for the religious holiday, which kicks off with processions around the country on Sunday.
