Pedro Sanchez has celebrated the Spain’s diversity and defended its social rights in a message marking the country’s National Day.
In a video published on X, the Socialist prime minister is seen walking through the gardens of the Moncloa Palace, with the Spanish and European Union flags in the background.
‘There are many ways to live in this Spain of ours, because we are all very different. And that’s a good thing,’ he said.
‘What unites us is not that we all think alike, but everything we have managed to build together, which is now part of our everyday lives.’
The video features images of Spanish sporting triumphs, traditional food, villages and cultural celebrations, alongside paintings by artists including Goya and Miro.
Sanchez also highlighted what he described as the rights secured by Spanish society, including access to education, healthcare, housing and personal freedoms.
He defended ‘the right to express whatever opinion you want, to study what you want, to receive healthcare, to be able to live in your own home, to be and love whoever you want, and to grow old with dignity’.
The footage also includes demonstrations in support of public education and healthcare.
‘Our colours have room for many things,’ Sanchez said, referring to the Spanish flag.
‘They represent the rights we have won as a society and those still to come.’
He concluded: ‘This October 12, we fly the flag for our rights.’
The message coincided with Spain’s annual National Day celebrations, which include a military parade in Madrid attended by the royal family and senior political figures.
